On May 1, 2014, significant changes will take effect for Canadian government’s Skilled Trades Program. There are new eligible occupations, and will increase the overall cap from 3,000 to 5,000 applications.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (“FST”)

The FST allows people with experience in one of about 90 eligible occupations to immigrate to Canada. Eligible occupations include:

  • Welders
  • Sheet Metal workers
  • Boilermakers
  • Ironworkers
  • Electricians
  • Plumbers
  • Pipefitters and Steamfitters
  • Gas fitters
  • Heavy Duty Equipment
  • Mechanics
  • Automotive Mechanics
  • Motor Vehicle Body
  • Repairers
  • Crane Operators
  • Carpenters
  • Bricklayers
  • Plasterers
  • Painters
  • Mechanics
  • Central Control and Process
  • Operators
  • Chefs and Cooks
  • Butchers and Bakers

If you have experience in an eligible trade, and meet the minimum language requirements, you may be able to qualify. The FST program has lower language requirements than the FSW program: you only need to score 4 to 5 on the Canadian Language Benchmarks, instead of the minimum 7 for the FSW.

There is a cap of 100 applications per Eligible Occupation, with an overall cap of 5,000 applications for the FST. The race to beat the cap is anticipated to be fierce!  Thus, it is critical to start the application process as early as possible.  It takes much time and careful preparation to ensure that your application is ready, as well as language testing, Police clearances and other steps.

To see if you qualify under the FST Program, please contact us to arrange a one hour consultation. We will examine your background, assess your case, then advise you of your options. You may even qualify for more than one immigration program, so even if the cap on your FST occupation is reached, you may be able to qualify for another.
